    Ms Lascar

A message from our new Principal, Ms. Lascar

    Dear Avalon Lancer Community,

I am very humbled and honored to introduce myself as the new principal of Avalon K-12 school and to join this exceptional school community.  I can assure you that I share in this school community’s dedication to ensuring that our students are cared for every day while striving to prepare our young people for the challenges of the world beyond our school walls in a safe and supportive environment dedicated not only to their academic achievement but also to their social emotional growth and well-being.

I am moving to the Island and arriving to the Avalon school community as an educator with nearly a decade and a half of experience serving some of the most diverse communities within the city of Los Angeles and later my former home city of Long Beach.  I started my career as a special education teacher in the community of Watts in South Central Los Angeles and later served as a Special Education program administrator and as an Assistant Principal.  I have had the privilege to work with many talented and dedicated teachers within our school district as well as been honored to serve some of the most resilient students and families in their efforts to grow and achieve what sometimes is adversely systemically difficult in our society; a quality education rich in equitable opportunities.

While I am an experienced educator, I am first and foremost a lifelong student.  I believe for as much depth of knowledge that we possess we have equally as much depth left in our learning.  It is with this philosophy forthright in action that I welcome an open door policy to feedback, input, and collaboration as your new principal.  It was a pleasure to visit the school and meet a few of the dedicated staff members of Avalon School.  Thank you for giving me a warm welcome.  I am eagerly looking forward to meeting each and every one of you and am with much excitement and curiosity looking forward to learning the many intricacies of our unique Island and school community.

I am also greatly looking forward to continuing to support your dedicated efforts in not only educating our students but inspiring in them a love of knowledge that carries within them the many moments of your thoughtful lessons.  In the words of W.B. Yeats “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

I am immensely grateful to be able to join alongside you as you continue the work of lighting the many fires of inspiration, courage, resiliency, and curiosity in the young minds of your students.  Thank you for the great foundation you have built and for welcoming me into your Lancer community.

Please feel free to reach out anytime.  Go Lancers!

    Sincerely,

    M. Lascar

    School Loop

Avalon teachers, counselors, officer personnel, and administrators communicate with students and their families through traditional methods and newly adopted technologies. The most recent communication tool available to our staff is School Loop. School Loop is a web-based site that offers 6th through 12th grade students and their families a wide range of information about the school and their individual student. Students, parents, and guardians may obtain Avalon Schools School Loop accounts, and not only view news and updates about the school, but also peruse their own child’s class and homework assignments, test grades, and overall academic standing. School Loop can be used to reach teachers, counselors, and administrators by e-mail. Families may obtain assistance to sign onto School Loop at Back to School, or by individual appointment through their student’s counselor.

The school website is also a School Loop product.

School Messenger, a telephone based communication system, offers teachers, counselors, office staff, and administrators a tool to relate information about individual students or school-wide news to families in their native language. Teachers have access to a menu of pre-recorded messages concerning classroom assignments, grades, behaviors, and activities, that they can send to family phones with the touch of a couple letters on the keyboard.

Administrators and office personnel possess the ability to send notifications to families of targeted groups of students or the entire school population. Attendance calls arrive on family phones automatically on the day a student is absent from one or more class period. The school receives a list of unsuccessful calls every time a  message is sent, improving our ability to update phone numbers for our students’ families.
